While Israel repeatedly claimed throughout its ground and air offensive in the Gaza Strip that its army strikes targets with "surgical precision," reports from on the ground have told a far different story:

January 18, 2009
  • Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza Strip, a Gazan farmer, 24-year-old Abd As-Samad Abu Rejlieh, was killed, and his son injured by Israeli fire as they went to inspect the damage from the 22-day Israeli incursion to their lands

  • Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza Strip, Israeli fire injured a mother and her daughter in their home

  • Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, Israeli shells fell on a group of civilians


January 17, 2009
  • Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza Strip, Israeli forces shelled a fourth United Nations-run school, killing a mother and her young son and injuring another 14 people; four more people were killed when other shells struck nearby as people tried to escape

  • Northern Gaza, at the Karama Towers, Israeli warplanes dropped incendiary white phosphorus shells, killing three people; Palestinian medics say they found three completely burnt bodies covered in phosphorus

  • Gaza City, Tel Al-Hawa, Karama, and At-Tawam neighborhoods, renewed shelling reported

  • Ash-Shati refugee camp, Israeli warships fired on four Palestinians on the shore

  • Jabalya, Israeli artillery attacked the Taha Mosque

  • Beit Lahiya, Ad-Duwar area, intense shelling caused houses to go up in flames; a number of families were taken to Kamal Udwan Hospital with the help of UNRWA

  • Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, Israeli forces shelled several places

  • An-Nusseirat, the Al-Hasayneh area, phosphorus bombs landed on several houses, some owned by the Muhadi family

  • Al-Amour area, south Gaza, two Palestinians were killed from Israeli shelling

  • Khan Yunis, Al-Fakhari area, two brothers, Ibrahim Muhammad Sharab and Kassab Muhammad Sharab, were killed by Israeli fire; their father was also wounded in the attack

  • Rafah, the Al-Mawarej area, Israeli warplanes targeted the Abu Al-Enen supermarket with three rockets in addition to two houses in Al-Barahmeh area; hundreds have been forced to flee their homes in the Rafah area due to heavy bombing


January 16, 2009
  • Jabalya and Gaza City, Ash-Shujaieyah neighborhood, air strikes killed ten in one home in Gaza and another four in Jabalya

  • Gaza City, As-Saftawi neighborhood, an air strike killed an unknown number of Palestinians

  • Al-Bureij refugee camp, central Gaza Strip, a mother and her five children from the Al-Batran family were killed by an Israeli air strike on their home; Palestinian medical sources identified the dead as 30-year-old Manal, and her children 12-year-old Wala, 8-year-old Izz- Ad-Din, 10-year-old, Bilal, 11-year-old Islam, and seven-year-old Ihsan

  • Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, a man was killed while riding his motorcycle

  • Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, an Israeli missile killed three members of one family were killed and injured a fourth

  • Gaza City, Al-Ahli Hospital, an Israeli air strike on a car killed two civilians and injured a third

  • Jabalya, a shell landed on a group of children, killing a six-year-old girl according to officials at Kamal Udwan Hospital in northern Gaza

  • Rafah, Ash-Shaboura refugee camp, area near the near An-Nejma market, shelling killed 14-year-old Issa Ermelat and injured another person as well

  • Khan Yunis, medics At Nasser Hospital in said that 22-year-old Mamdouh Abdel Latif Abu Ruk died of wounds he sustained two-days ago in the town of Abassan.

  • Al-Bureij refugee camp, central Gaza Strip, an Italian journalist came under direct Israeli fire Friday, despite identifying himself and his driver as members of the press

  • Gaza City, Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood, Israeli forces attacked a Red Crescent hospital, setting it on fire, witnesses said that Israeli soldiers invaded residential buildings, seized a number of residents and forced hundreds to flee the neighborhood

  • Gaza City, Ash-Shifa Hospital, Mu'awiya Hassanein, the director of Ambulance and Emergency Services in the Ministry of Health, reported that at least 23 people had been killed in the Tel Al-Hawa invasion, and that rescue workers are still working to recover bodies


January 15, 2009
  • Gaza City, southern Rimal neighborhood, witnesses reported seeing dozens of families in their bedclothes in the streets, fleeing the Israeli onslaught on foot

  • Gaza City, Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood, Al-Quds Hospital went up in flames after it came under Israeli shelling, hit by three Israeli missiles, two of them suspected to contain white phosphorus

  • Gaza City, Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood, Israeli snipers opened fire on families running to take shelter in a Red Crescent hospital; when one family approached the hospital, Israeli snipers started firing at the family, shooting a young girl in the face and abdomen, while the father of the family was shot in the leg

  • Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, one Palestinian was killed and two others were injured by an Israeli air strike

  • Gaza City, Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, Israeli F16 fighter jet fired a missile at a house, killing three and injuring 25 others

  • Gaza City, UN's relief agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, headquarters, struck by Israeli shells laced with white phosphorus, injuring three workers; The compound includes the UNRWA offices, warehouses and a school, and as many as 700 Palestinians had taken refuge in the compound, which is still on fire

  • Gaza City, a media compound home to the Reuters news agency, NBC, and a number of Arab networks was attacked by Israeli forces; two journalists working for Abu Dhabi television were injured when at least one Israeli shell struck the building

  • Gaza City, Israeli forces shelled a store near Al-Karameh towers, the Bashir mosque, and the Al-Arqam school

  • Beit Lahiya and Jabalya, north of Gaza City, and Khan Yunis all experienced heavy artillery shelling


January 14, 2009
  • Beit Lahiya and Khan Yunis, artillery shelling hit several homes, killing at least 15

  • Gaza City, Sabra neighborhood, air strikes killed five people and wounded seven others, all members of the Abu Musa family

  • Gaza City, Tel El-Hawa neighborhood, a UNRWA worker was seriously injured when warplanes struck a UN-marked car

  • Gaza City, Al-Qawasmi neighborhood, shelling killed two people and injured eight

  • Al-Qarrara, a 15-year-old boy, Izz Al-Deen Al-Farra, was killed by the Israeli military

  • Rafah, along the border with Egypt, Israeli warplanes hit some 40 targets in the area, killing at least two people

  • Jabalya, shelling killed at least six people, including two women

  • Gaza City, Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, missiles fired from Israeli warplanes destroyed a cemetery, bringing down nearby houses as well

  • Gaza City, Touffah neighborhood, Israel tanks shelled houses, injuring dozens

  • Gaza Strip, central region, witnesses again reported that Israeli warplanes deployed white phosphorus, a chemical that is illegal when knowingly used to harm civilians


January 13, 2009
  • Khuza'a, near Khan Yunis, an air strike collapsed a three-story house, killing Khalil Hamdan Ahmad An Najjar, 75, and injured at least seven of his immediate family members, and Rohiyeh Ahmad Suleiman, 45, was killed fleeing the same neighborhood, and at least eleven people have been killed in the ongoing strikes on Khuza'a

  • Gaza City, Israeli forces opened fire on two members of the Ayyad family while they were on their way home, killing both 30-year-old Yehyah Jamil Ayyad and 23-year-old Ashraf Hamdi Ayyad in the Zeitoun neighborhood

  • Nuseirat refugee camp, the Nuseirat Ahly sports club was bombed by F16 jets, killing two people and destroying houses that surrounded the club

  • Jabalya refugee camp seven civilians killed in air strikes

  • Tel Al-Hawwa, Israeli troops invaded and ransacked several homes, and groups of soldiers fired from rooftops, killing at least four civilians

  • Tel Al-Hawwah, Al-Mujtama college demolished by shelling


January 12, 2009
  • Jabalya refugee camp, shelling in Al-Jurn area

  • Jabalya refugee camp, a Palestinian paramedic was killed while evacuating the wounded after an Israeli jet fired a missile and hit his ambulance

  • Jabalya, a man was killed inside a car parked near Caliphs Mosque

  • Beit Lahiya, Israeli jets bombed the home of Shadi Abu Labad

  • Beit Lahiya, Al-Karama building, random fire of an Israeli warplane killed 25-year-old Ibrahim A'yesh Suleiman

  • Jabalya, near the Hijazi clinic, Israeli tanks fired artillery shells on the home of Mohammad Khalaf, killing two brothers, 35-year-old Ibrahim and 19-year-old Bilal Khalaf

  • Gaza City, Israeli planes hit Palestine Square, killing two and injuring at least ten

  • Beit Lahiya, missiles hit a home belonging to the Al-Masri family, as well as the Organization for the Injured and Handicapped around Sheikh Zaid


January 11, 2009
  • Gaza City and in the Jabalya refugee camp, at least five Palestinians were killed in separate Israeli strikes

  • Gaza City, Ash-Shuja'eiyah neighborhood, two Palestinians killed from shelling

  • Jabalya Refugee Camp, Al-Jurn area, two Palestinians were killed from Israeli attacks and a number of others were injured

  • Khuza'a and Abasan villages, east of Khan Yunis, women and children burn victims were reported at Nasser Hospital due to the use of white phosphorous bombs by the Israeli military

  • Khuza'a village, east of Khan Yunis, at least 50 were injured as Israeli strikes hit a dozen homes in the village

  • Gaza City, four members of the Bashir family were killed by Israeli airstrikes on the family home in the Al-Karama neighborhood

  • Beit Lahiya, white phosphorous bombs set homes ablaze, killing at least three from the Ma'rouf and Ghaban families and injuring dozens more


January 10, 2009
  • Ash-Shati refugee camp, Norwegian aid agency (NPA) vehicle destroyed by a missle fired from an Israeli drone, causing severe damage to the surrounding buildings, no injuries yet reported

  • North of Gaza City, hospital officials said two children, brothers Ali and Kamal An-Nather were killed, as well as their father

  • Jabalya, ten others were injured when Israeli forces shelled a residential area, and seven members of the Abed Rabu family were killed by an Israeli shell while venturing out of their home to buy food

  • Beit Lahiya, three Palestinians were killed, and ten injured in an Israeli airstrike on the house of the As-Salman family and two sisters, members of the Al-Helu family, were also killed in a separate airstrike in Beit Lahiya

  • Gaza City, Zeitoun neighborhood, home of journalist Samir Khalifa was destroyed by an Israeli shell, and the home of journalist Ala Murtaji was shelled, killing him and critically injuring his mother

  • Gaza City, Zeitoun neighborhood, two members of the Abu Al-Kheir family killed when shells hit their home

  • Al-Bureij refugee camp, home of Mahmoud Ashur was bombed by Israeli warplanes, and a missile was also fired at a mosque in the camp, several were injured in the attacks

  • An-Nuseirat, central Gaza, an unspecified number of members of the Al-Balbisi family were killed

  • Rafah, two homes bombed, one of which was near a children's hospital, one civilian killed in his house by artillery fire & at least three others were injured


January 9, 2009
  • Beit Lahiya, 7 civilians - all members of the same family - including an infant killed when Israeli mortar shells struck their home

  • Gaza City, Olvera Al-Jarou, a Ukranian national, and her 2-year-old son killed by Israeli tank shell

  • Gaza City, home of Gaza police chief Abu Obeida Al-Jarrah leveled in air stike in Sheikh Radwan neighborhood

  • Khan Younis, Ar-Rebat Mosque destroyed in air strike

  • Gaza City, Israeli airstrikes hit the Jawwara building, home to more than 20 local, national and international press offices. No injuries were reported at this time

  • Gaza City, Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood, Palestine TV cameraman Ihab Al-Wahidi was killed from tank shelling along with his mother and his wife

  • Al-Latara and Juhor Ad-Dik, central Gaza Strip, family members and medics uncovered dozens of bodies in the rubble of destroyed homes

  • Khan Younis, A'basan As-Sagheera neighborhood, three Palestinians were found dead

  • Rafah, Gaza's International Football Stadium bombed; artillery strikes also damaged several sports clubs and youth organization headquarters in the area

  • Gaza City, police station in Zeitoun neighborhood destroyed in air strike


January 8, 2009
  • Rafah, Israeli air strikes along the Egyptian border have destroy 25 houses

  • Gaza City, 15 corpses found by aid workers in the previously isolated Zeitoun neighborhood

  • Khan Younis, two brothers killed by mortar shells in Abasan neighborhood; they were identified as 13-year-old Muhammad and 11-year-old Ibrahim Abu Daqqa

  • Al-Qarara, two women killed by artillery shells while attempting to flee advancing tanks

  • Gaza City, two houses in the As-Sahabah neighborhood and another house in Ash-Sha'f neighborhood in the east of the city destroyed in air strikes

  • Gaza City, Al-Muhammadi Mosque in Sheikh Radwan neighborhood completely destroyed, along with houses and shops near the mosque

  • Khan Younis, two men killed in the Al-Amal neighborhood Hussein Sem'an and Hassan Abu Musa.

  • Al-Bureij refugee camp, man killed in bombing of home belonging to Walid Fadel

  • Jabalya and An-Nuseirat refugee camps, seven homes bombed

  • Bani Saheila, two police stations and main passport agency in Gaza City bombed

  • Gaza City, As-Sakhra shopping center damaged in attack


January 7, 2009
  • Gaza City, seven killed in air strikes on the Sheikh Radwan and Zeitoun neighborhoods.

  • Gaza City, four killed and eight injured when Israeli missiles hit a playground near the At-Taqwa Mosque, in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood

  • Gaza City, residential house in the Zeitoun neighborhood struck, killing three and injuring dozens

  • Beit Lahiya, at least one Palestinian killed after Israeli missile strikes his home

  • Jabalya refugee camp, three sisters killed by Israeli fire; the sisters were identified as two-year-old Amal, four-year-old Su'ad and six-year-old Samar

  • Gaza City, 60 to 70 Palestinian civilians found dead in their home in the Zeitoun neighborhood by medics; the home had been repeatedly shelled by the Israeli army on Monday, January 5 after nearly 100 members of the Samouni family had been ordered gather there


January 6, 2009
  • Jabaliya refugee camp, Israeli forces killed 43 and injured at least 150 Palestinians at the Al-Fakhoura UN school that was sheltering displaced people who fled their homes

  • Ash-Shati refugee camp, near Gaza City, Israeli forces targeted a UN school, killing three people from one family; they were identified as 17-year-old Abid As-Sultan, 24-year-old Mahmoud As-Sultan and 26-year-old Jamal As-Sultan

  • Jabaliya refugee camp, Al-Awda Hospital, Israeli artillery fired towards a parked police car; the car was destroyed and the hospital's building was damaged; a resident of the area, Ali Salman, was also injured

  • Jabaliya, houses in the Tel Az-Za'atar neighborhood shelled by Israeli artillery; three children were injured

  • Gaza City, a 15-year-old boy was killed when an Israeli drone missile was fired at him while he was walking in the center of the street

  • Al-Bureij refugee camp, Israeli artillery shelling kills four people and wounds 16 others in a market

  • Gaza City, in the Zaitoun neighborhood 13 members of the Ad-Daya family are killed; five of them were removed from the rubble of their house; survivors said that there were more than 25 others under the rubble

  • Rafah, attacks caused damage to two hospitals and destroyed the Civil Defence station

  • Deir Al-Balah refugee camp, at least 20 injured by fire from Israeli warships

  • Gaza City, 3 siblings, a girl and her grandfather killed in Zeitoun neighborhood during an artillery strike


January 4, 2009
  • Gaza City, two medics killed on rescue operation in Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood after an Israeli drone strikes the neighborhood for second time that day; a third medic was gunned down in the same place minutes later; a fourth medic was reported killed on Al Jazeera

  • Gaza City, a mother and her four children are killed in an air strike on their home in the Al-Toufah neighborhood

  • Beit Lahiya, ten civilians, including four children are killed in a series of air strikes within the city


January 3, 2009
  • Beit Lahiya, mosque shelled by artillery; 14 civilian worshipers killed; a missile hit the same mosque during the evening prayers, injuring dozens

  • Gaza City, American International School in Gaza completely destroyed in air strike; security guard killed

  • Gaza City, Palestinian parliament building, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education hit in air strikes - all government buildings located in close proximity to residential high-rise apartment buildings


December 31, 2008
  • Khan Younis, donkey-cart targeted in air strike; two civilians killed, several others wounded

  • Gaza City, Abu Hanifah An-Nu'man Mosque in Tel Al-Hawa destroyed in air strike; several civilians injured

  • An-Nusayrat refugee camp, private home hit by a missile and severely damaged

  • Gaza City, Israeli tanks fire at residential areas in Tel Az-Za'atar neighborhood, killing a Palestinian doctor and injuring several members of a medical crew

  • Gaza City, office of de-facto Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas destroyed in air strike


December 30, 2008
  • Rafah, tunnels between Egypt and Gaza that supply most consumer goods currently available in the Gaza Strip destroyed in series of air strikes

  • Gaza City, Ashour lathe workshop in the Zaitoun neighborhood severely damaged in air strike

  • Gaza City, Dalloul dairy plant in the Sabra neighborhood severely damaged in air strike

  • Beit Hanoun, two siblings killed by an Israeli missile while emptying garbage into a dumpster near their home on As-Sekka Street

  • Khan Younis, police station in Al-Qarara village leveled in air strike; one civilian bystander killed by flying debris


December 29, 2008
  • Jabaliya refugee camp, home of Maher Zaqout struck by missile; Zaqout was not home, but seven civilians died in the strike

  • Gaza City, government ministry buildings in Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood leveled

  • Ash-Sheik Zayid, Northern District Governorate headquarters targeted in air strike

  • Al-Buraij, Omar bin Al-Khattab Mosque destroyed in air strike

  • Gaza City, Palestinian Interior Ministry compound destroyed in air strike

  • Gaza City, Islamic University damaged in series of air strikes

  • Al-Shati refugee camp, near Gaza City, civilian homes damaged in air strikes

  • Gaza City, civilian home near Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh's residence heavily damaged in air strike

  • Gaza City, truck belonging to Abu Imad Sanur hit in missile strike, killing 8 civilians, including Sanur's son


December 28, 2008
  • Yabna refugee camp, family killed by missile fired in Israeli air strike

  • Rafah, 3 civilian casualties in air strike

  • Khan Younis, one child killed in air strike

  • Deir al-Balah, air strikes, homes destroyed, several civilian injuries

  • Gaza City, port facilities damaged by shelling

  • Jabiliya refugee camp, mosque destroyed in missile attack, 5 girls (age 2-10) killed in nearby home

  • Gaza City, Al-Aqsa television network targeted in missile strike(Hamas)
